Why is the new Juventus stadium going to be called ‘Belmont’?

Juventus fans will be pleased to know that their team’s new home stadium is named after a former Belmont football team player.

The Bianconeri announced on Tuesday that they would be christening the new stadium in honour of former midfielder Gianluigi Buffon, who won the World Cup in 1994 with Italy.

Buffon scored more goals in Serie A than any other player in history, including scoring the first ever Serie A hat-trick against Barcelona in a 5-1 win.

It is a fitting name, as Buffon was born in Belmont, a town in the northern region of Lombardy, and played for the local team, which was renamed Belmont in honour.
